Home : Santa Cruz, Part 1 of Many
This day was classic, I picked up Ratty and we saw the conditions were glassy and epic. We headed towards the Ave and as we passed the lane saw clean oily lines rolling in. I decided to pull into the lot and check it as the sand had been really good and Off The Wall had been good lately.
Ratty wasn’t stoked haha. He knew the Ave would be good but we saw some really good wedges and I talked him into it. We ended up scoring some of our best shots that day as Ratty had a magic board, and was doing huge backside airs over my head, and we needed that angle way more than a couple more backlit tubes at The Ave. The shots were published everywhere. We still laugh about that day all the time.

This day was clear and beautiful, low tide and glassy, I wanted to surf the ave, Nelly insisted on its beach, I pleaded and whined but we ended up paddling out at its beach.
We ended up scoring insane shots that day, good call Nelly!

It was 230 in the morning and I was dead asleep. A massive flash of lightning lit up the house and was in- stantly followed buy a loud crack of thunder that shook my whole house. I jumped up in a panic....“Where’s my tripod?” I was out of it wandering around still half asleep. I found everything and raced out the door.
"I found my way to the Lane as lightning struck all around me and my car."
I had never seen a storm like this in my life! The energy was crazy and i knew it was a risky shoot, but i had to go for it. This ended up being one of the most memorable shoots of my life, and also one of the saddest. The storm started a huge forest fire and we not only lost a huge piece of our beautiful Redwood forest, but many people lost their houses. A sad time for Santa Cruz.

My favorite person to see every day was always Jay. He would always greet me with a massive smile full of real stoke. The original Positive Vibe Warrior. Jay was something special. He always talked nice about others weather they were around or not. I loved that.
"His surfing was like watching poetry on the water."
So stylish and pure. Pleasure Point and surfing in general is a better place because of Jay. I miss him, everyone misses him.
"Live Like Jay."
